Bee Health = Human Health – A sit-down with Dr. Paul Saladino

Earlier this summer, we had the opportunity to sit down with my friend Dr. Paul Saladino and talk with him about Save the Bee, pesticides, some of our shared experiences, and much more. Paul’s a champion for the restoration of our food systems and human health, and we discussed how what’s troubling our bees and other pollinators is also what’s troubling our health.

Paul and Save the Bee executive director, Eric Mason, explored the alarming extent of honey adulteration and contamination with substances like glyphosate and neonicotinoids, which impact the bee’s gut biome in ways that echo human health concerns.

They also discussed the immense pressure industrial agriculture, like the almond industry’s reliance on 88% of U.S. managed bees, puts on these creatures, turning pollination events into ‘pathogen Super Bowls.’

This conversation was a reminder that the health of our bees is a mirror reflecting the state of our environment and, by extension, our own health. Let’s continue to support practices that protect our pollinators and, in turn, ourselves.
