Bee Health, Bee Research, Bee Threats

And if everyone lit just one little candle…”

As a new(-ish) Executive Director of Save the Bee, I get this question often: “Why do you say Save the Bee and not Save the Bees?”

Here’s why.

  • Because big change starts small.
  • Because clarity matters.
  • Because people respond to what they can see, feel, and do.

“Save the Bee” is singular by design.

It’s a call to personal responsibility.

It’s a reminder that one act—yours—can matter.

It’s not about waiting for a mass movement.

It’s about becoming one.

The Power of One

When Bishop Fulton Sheen closed his 1950’s “Life is worth Living” TV broadcasts, he often quoted an old song: “And if everyone lit just one little candle, what a bright world this would be.”

That’s the heart of it. One bee. One flower. One decision. One person doing one thing differently.

Singular action becomes collective impact.

We don’t say “the bees” because that can sound like a faceless swarm, someone else’s responsibility. But “the bee”? That’s specific. That’s now. That’s yours.

What “Save the Bee” Really Means

Let’s be clear:

When we say Save the Bee, we mean every bee. Every pollinator. Every plant. Every thread in the web of life that bees help weave and hold.

We mean:

  • Local honeybees and wild natives
  • Monarch butterflies and hummingbirds
  • The farmers, food systems, and ecosystems that depend on them.

It’s all connected. But we start with one.

What This Has to Do with Business

The business world loves scale, speed, and systems. But real transformation often begins somewhere humbler: With a single point of focus.

Companies that lead with purpose know this. They don’t try to fix everything all at once. They find one meaningful problem and commit to it—publicly, persistently, and personally.

Save the Bee works the same way. It’s a brand, yes. But it’s also a mindset:

  • What is your “bee”?
  • What’s the one issue, customer, story, or value that deserves your focus today?
  • How could a more singular call to action sharpen your message, your mission, your impact?

A Singular, Shared Story

“Save the Bee” is a story that starts small but grows wide. It invites people in—gardeners, teachers, funders, kids, CEOs. It gives them a role. A character. A task. And here’s the beautiful part:

  • When one person acts, others do too.
  • That’s how it works in nature.
  • That’s how it works in culture.
  • That’s how movements start.

So, yes—we say Save the Bee. Because behind every “bee” is a choice. And behind every choice, a world can change.
